La recherche et l’installation d’un lieu sûr n’ont pas été inventées en même temps que la thérapie EMDR. L’hypnose et les TCC, par exemple, utilisent également cette méthode. L’objectif principal est de créer un lieu de sécurité, un ancrage, un refuge ou même un signe-signal qui permettra au patient, à chaque fois que cela est nécessaire, avant, pendant ou après la séance, de pouvoir s’apaiser en réactivant une ressource, lorsqu’il est submergé par ses émotions. Il paraît alors fondamental que ce « lieu sûr ou lieu calme » soit bien installé au préalable du traitement, afin que cette sécurité fasse partie des bases fondamentales de la thérapie. L’objectif est de créer un conditionnement qui va permettre au patient, s’il a été suffisamment été exercé, de réactiver la réponse de sécurité et de relaxation ressentie dans le lieu sûr, à chaque fois qu’il en aura besoin.
