Description
If we look at this term from a psychotherapeutic perspective, a cognition is a belief we have about ourselves that organizes our perception, thinking and planning of our actions. When a negative event occurs, and it is experienced with difficulty, learning sometimes remains at an early stage, that is to say locked to survival reactions. These require a focus on danger, and an organization of survival in terms of flight, fight, or submission. We know that trauma is made up of dysfunctionally stored information, which does not change over time. We can therefore imagine that this partial learning (for example, I am in danger, I cannot do anything, I cannot trust anyone), blocked in the survival system, although very useful at the time of the events, becomes dysfunctional. for the life after, especially if each new situation is underpinned by this belief which has become irrational. A cognition is therefore not an action, for example I manage, nor an emotion, for example, I am ashamed, nor an assertion about others or about a situation, for example he/she/it is disgusting, nor a statement in the third person, for example it is null. A cognition is a Self-belief that defines us as a person. This is why its formulation must be self-referenced: “I am…” As other effective therapies demonstrate, for example schema therapy (Youn…
