EMDRにおける眼球運動に関する考察 ースピードに着目して一Comparing eye movement induction at different speeds : Saccadic versus smooth pursuit eye movements

Description

Several existing studies on eye movements( EMs) in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) have indicated that rapid horizontal saccadic EMs may have effects on memory retrieval and recall diminishing the vividness and emotional intensity of autobiographical memories, and integrating traumatic memories into semantic memories. However, EMDR therapists appear to elicit smooth pursuit EMs by instructing clients to follow their fingers. In this study, in order to clarify the types of EMs induced during EMDR, we asked participants to follow with their eyes a visual target that moves smoothly and horizontally between two points for 30 times under different speeds: 0. 4 Hz, 0.6 Hz, 0.8H z, 1.0 Hz, and 1.2 Hz. We used TalkEye Free to measure eye tracks and analyzed data from nine healthy adults (Mage.=27.1. SD=9.02). The results showed that the participants mainly made pursuit EMs when the visual target moved at 0.4 Hz. but there were large individual differences. We identified an average of 73.0% of eye tracks as saccadic EMs when the visual target moved faster than 0.6 Hz. This indicated that even if the visual target was inducing pursuit EMs. the participants' eyes were still making saccadic EMs. Pursuit EMs and saccadic EMs have completely different neural pathways. In this study, we reviewed existing models related to EMDR and saccadic EMs. such as orienting response and REM sleep. We speculated that saccadic EMs are necessary for processing negative memories in EMDR and that clinicians must strive to maintain saccadic EMs. However, the actual EMs in EMDR require various speeds according to clinical judgment, and further research on the effects of different types of EMs is awaited.
