EMDR therapy with pregnant and postpartum clients: Clinical decision points and treatment considerations

Description

Some EMDR clinicians seek out to specialize in perinatal mental health, whereas others may find themselves with an occasional pregnant client in their caseload.  Without experience working with pregnant and postpartum clients, clinicians may inadvertently halt or slow treatment, using “resourcing” skills only. “Can I do EMDR therapy with my pregnant client?” is a common question on listservs and in consultation. EMDR therapists who work with TRNs, in particular, may find themselves working with a pregnant client in crisis, and might wonder about whether to proceed with EMDR therapy.

This presentation will aid EMDR therapists in learning about the potential negative impacts of untreated trauma on a pregnant client and the potential long term impacts on a baby, highlighting the importance of early intervention. We will review the prevalence and impact of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, reproductive trauma, and perinatal loss, and the disproportionate impact on BIPOC and LGBTQ+ parents.

We will also discuss the protective and mitigating impact of EMDR therapy, and various treatment considerations and nuances when working with perinatal clients. Clinical decision points from a perinatal mental health lens will be addressed, aiding attendees in treatment planning. Whether you specialize in working with this population, or are interested in learning more, you will be empowered with numerous tangible skills to use with your pregnant and postpartum clients.
