What first nations communities can teach us about complex resilience, AIP, and intensive EMDR therapy

Description

Many of us have heard the term Complex trauma, Lets meet its Cuz - Complex Resilience. Complex Resilience speaks to the layers of intergenerational strength, culture and Ancestor wisdom we ALL carry with in us, this is the fuel of the Adaptive Information that is a Ally in healing work. My work within Indigenous communities has provided me with invaluable insights into the effectiveness of the AIP (Adaptive Information Processing) model. Through these experiences, I have learned critical lessons about when and how it is “safe enough” to address trauma. How to do that in a Culturally “safe enough” way, at an appropriate place on the Trauma processing continuum. Through a Parts lens I have developed an approach that can be used in a FIFO capacity using Intensive EMDR Therapy. This approach can also be used in a Private Practice or Clinic setting. The clients I work with clients are currently living with intergenerational and complex trauma. Many of these clients may not be in safe environments, making it essential to prioritize safety while simultaneously engaging in this vital healing work. Tapping into strength-based stories, cultural narratives, hopes, and dreaming serves as a powerful means to support our processing work. These elements not only foster resilience, they are already within and when accessed can create a safe space for clients to desensitize from currently active trauma memories. In this presentation, I will share stories and lessons learned from my interactions with Indigenous communities, highlighting the importance of cultural context in therapeutic practices. Additionally, I will share practical and creative tools and techniques that can be integrated into standard protocol and beyond. My hope is that by better understanding diverse client needs and spotlighting complex resilience we can cultivate a more inclusive and effective therapeutic approach that honours the unique experiences of those we serve.
