Petals of a rose: Demystifying dissociative identity disorder (DID) in EMDR therapy treatment

Description

Many EMDR therapists struggle to effectively navigate dissociation in EMDR sessions. These struggles sometimes result from fear of people who dissociate or being impacted by stigma about dissociation, both within the psychological professions and in the media. Often times, EMDR trainers and consultants can make the problem worse, especially presenting dissociation as something that is to be avoided rather than embraced as a survival strategy. In this workshop, EMDR Therapy trainer and author Dr. Jamie Marich, who is public about living with dissociative identities, shares her favorite teaching film on helping others to understand Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), Petals of a Rose. Jamie is also joined by the film’s director and co-author Dylan Crumpler, and his mother Holly Crumpler. Given that DID has often been inaccurately and negatively portrayed in film/television, Dylan Crumpler created his senior thesis film at Chapman University to realistically depict the life of a woman with DID. Dylan wrote a screenplay with his mother, Holly Crumpler, who has DID, and then developed it into a short film. Due to the incredible global reception of the film, the subtitles have been translated into numerous languages. In her own teaching on normalizing the experiences of DID and dissociation for EMDR therapists, Jamie has taken to using Petals of a Rose as a teaching tool for case conceptualization. In this workshop, participants will view the 15-minute film, engage in a panel discussion with Jamie, Dylan, and Holly, and then explain how an EMDR therapist might proceed if Rose, the film’s protagonist, came into EMDR therapy. Holly, who has also received EMDR therapy, will join in the discussion with Jamie on case conceptualization. Question/answer and interaction from the audience will be promoted and encouraged. This presentation is appropriate for all levels of EMDR therapists.
