Origins and update; Origins of EMDR with critical incidents; Preliminary research and results; Clinical use of EMDR with dissociative patients

Dr. Shapiro will discuss her discovery of the effects of saccadic eye-movements, their proposed underlying physiological bases, the development of EMDR procedure, and a controlled experiment that supports its efficacy as a rapid treatment for traumatic memories. The mechanics of the procedure will be demonstrated on a volunteer, followed by short segments of taped treatment sessions to illustrate specific applications. Two case histories will be described, along with the latest applications of the procedure. The remainder of the presentation, as time allows, will include a discussion of (1) specific case-histories, (2) research implications, (3) possible parallels between EMDR and REM sleep, and (4) Synclectic treatment effects.
