Personal experiences of integrating techniques of CBT into treatment frame of EMDR

Description

Psychotherapy integration has being accepted by more and more clinicians. From assimilative integration perspectives, the author shares her experiences of integrating techniques of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) into treatment plan of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). CBT Techniques can be used in several stages of EMDR. In history taking stage, CBT techniques are very helpful to find negative cognition (NC). Clinicians usually try to find the underlining core CN of the present distress and then trace back to the etiological memories through NC. In preparation stage, CBT techniques are useful to alleviate symptoms and are helpful to recognize the most prominent negative cognition in order to make an overall treatment plan. Besides that, CBT techniques can help to develop positive self-assessment opposed to the negative cognition, help the clients to learn new coping methods, which strengthen adaptive memory network and then will boost EMDR reprocessing. Moreover, CBT techniques are very helpful to deal with emergent or unexpected incidents and keep clients in stable. In assessment stage, arrow-down technique is effective to find suitable negative cognitions and positive ones. In desensitization stage, cognitive interweaves (CI) might be needed when reprocessing blocks and techniques of Cognitive Therapy are helpful to use CI properly. This article concerns the author’s experiences of assimilative integration, and welcome to communication with colleagues.
