Absorption technique and EMDR to enhance the motivation, reduce anxiety and increase confidence of athletes for preparing the province competition

Description

43 athletes from many kind of sport like football, wushu, shooting, tae kwon do, gymnastics, athletics and billiards complained lack of confidence and anxious related bad experience in competitions they have been followed before. In general, though there is distressful experience, but not enough to be enforced PTSD diagnosis, except in 3 participants who experienced flashback. Symptoms that appear are feeling worried, anxious about the match that will be encountered, somatic complaint, urinary frequency, gastrointestinal, respiratory (feel chest pressure or shortness of breath), in some there are flashback into previous bad experience during the competition so that decreasing their self-confidence. Before and after treatment, we assess all participants with Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A). Then, the result of that assessment will be compared and the percentage calculated as the description of the treatment result. HAM-A assessment before treatment showed that 8 participant in severe; 26 participant in moderate and 9 participant in mild anxiety. Participants were divided into 2 groups. The first group are 23 athletes with severe anxiety (4 athletes), moderate anxiety (13 athletes), and mild anxiety (6 athletes) were given treatment only with absorption technique alone, while the second group are 20 athletes with severe anxiety (4 athletes), moderate anxiety (13 athletes) and mild anxiety (3 athletes) treated with both absorption and basic protocol of EMDR on the stressful situation. After treatment, in group 1 found decrease of anxiety symptoms, as follows: from severe to moderate 1 (25%); severe to mild 1 (25%); severe to normal 2 (50%); moderate to mild 5 (38%); moderate to normal 8 (62); mild to normal 6 (100%). In group 2 found decrease of anxiety symptoms, as follows: from severe to moderate 0 (0%); severe to mild 2 (50%); severe to normal 2 (50%); moderate to mild 6 (46); moderate to normal 7 (54%); mild to normal 3 (100%). It turns out that the results obtain absorption technique to help athletes as motivational enhancement techniques and then increase their confidence too, both as a single treatment without full protocol of EMDR or continued with EMDR full protocol.
