Comparing the efficacy of EMDR to treatment as usual for veterans with military-related PTSD

Description

Two seminal studies currently provide empirical evidence for treatment of PTSD and anchor the VA’s treatment focus/ funding...Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) (Monson et al., 2006) Prolonged Exposure (PE) (Schnurr et al., 2007). Both showed 40% - 41% success in reducing/eliminating PTSD symptoms. Carlson et al., (1998) showed that EMDR reduced or eliminated 77.7% of symptoms in Viet Nam veterans. No further research of a similar nature had been conducted since 1998. The VA and many other agencies worldwide lists EMDR as an “A” rated treatment for PTSD (DoD, 2010) however further research is needed to solidify its place as an empirically supported treatment for veterans suffering from PTSD.
