False dichotomies, the social construction of shame and EMDR with LGBTQ clients

Description

In the U.S., LGBT persons attempt and complete suicide at substantially higher rates than non-LGBT persons. For LGBT youth, 90% reported being bullied in school during the past year. The developmental experiences of LGBTQ youth and adults includes significant personal and social trauma. This results in internalized toxic shame and leads to negative behaviors such as substance abuse, dysfunctional relationships, and self-harm. Attendees in this workshop will gain critical insight about the psychosocial development and deadly effects of such shame. Dynamic and interactive teaching tools will help attendees learn EMDR therapy techniques and strategies to alleviate shame and trauma wounds.
