EMDR in South Korea: Research, practice, and dissemination

Description

The first South Korean EMDR basic training begun in 2003 and since then, gradual progress has been made in regard to research, practice, and dissemination. But a recent surge of social demands for trauma therapy brought by a Sewol Ferry Disaster in 2014 and national recognition of “trauma” as a social phenomenon skyrocketed public and professional interests in Korea. This presentation is a personal account of EMDR research, practice, and dissemination in South Korea what we have done and learned from past experience. I will look over local EMDR researches done during the last 15 years, collaborations with other professional societies, interactions with public and government organizations, issues with insurance and national health system, and things good and bad with media and communications, EMDR trainings/ dissemination. The path of EMDR in this country may not be similar to other nations especially those in Europe and North America but has more common grounds with other Asian countries. Pitfalls and difficulties will be also shared and desensitized along with present issues, and future template will made for EMDR in Korea and hopefully, in bigger sense, in Asia.
