HP-02-001 Preliminary experience with EMDR in the psychotherapeutic approach of male sexual dysfunction

Description

Objective:
The EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an innovative therapeutic approach to cope with emotional difficulties and traumatic sexual events. Nevertheless, there is little experience in its use for the psychotherapeutic treatment of sexual dysfunctions. The aim of this project is to evaluate the effect of the EMDR therapy in male sexual dysfunctions.

Methods:
Clinical records of male patients with sexual dysfunction who had their first visit from October 2015 to September 2016 are currently being reviewed. The inclusion criterion was patient’s treatment naïve to EMDR where the anticipatory fear was associated with a traumatic sexual event. The exclusion criterion was established organic etiology by urological assessment. Patients underwent a structured interview and were assessed by the HAD (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), IIEF (International Index of Erectile Function) and MCMI-III (Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III) before and after the treatment and rated by SUD (subjective units of distress scale) before, during and after the EMDR sessions. The standard EMDR protocol was incorporated.

Results:
Preliminary results: 13 patients met the inclusion criterion for EMDR therapy. The mean age of the patients was 44 (age range 17-67). Reasons for initial consultation were erectile dysfunction (9), premature ejaculation (3) and sexual aversion (1). IIEF, HAD, anxiety of MCMI-III basal medians were 17 (mild to moderate dysfunction), 9 anxiety/10 depression and 78 respectively. We have considered only patients within 6 months follow-up therapy: high therapeutic adhesion was observed (only 3 patients left the therapy) and self-reported and clinician-rated anticipatory anxiety decreased (view data table).

Conclusion:
EMDR therapy might be a therapeutic alternative for sex therapists. It seems that installs positive feelings and beliefs of functionality, capability and increases sexual satisfaction.
