Beyond the cognitive interweave - strategies to facilitate memory reprocessing

Description

Background and aims
Management of obstacles in memory reprocessing is crucial in EMDR Therapy. Obstacle may impair processing in simple PTSD as well as in more complex disorders. The cognitive interweave offers many options. But in some patient even the cognitive interweave is not offering all we need. Especially in managing hyperarousal alternative strategies are needed.

Methods
The author researched the literature regarding the topic of obstacles in memory reprocessing. Analysis of the treatment of patients who failed in in EMDR treatments lead to trials on interventions to facilitate processing.

Results
Obstacles in memory reprocessing can be related to different causes. Treatment planning as well as interventions during reprocessing offer solutions. The issue of the therapeutic relationship is also important.

Conclusions
This presentation will give an overview on obstacles in memory reprocessing. This lecture uses reflection on theory, case presentation and video examples. Issues related to the therapeutic relationship as well as treatment planning will be discussed. Interventions beyond the cognitive interweave are necessary. These will be presented and discussed to transfer this knowledge into the practice of the therapist.
