Covid 19 and online EMDR

Description

The current study focuses on the effect of five sessions of EMDR therapy (EMDR R-TEP intervention) on PTSD levels of individuals who can be defined as a high-risk group during the pandemic process. For this purpose, online EMDR therapy (EMDR R-TEP Protocol) was applied to Covid-19 patients, their families and staff and healthcare professionals working directly with Covid-19 patients. EMDR R-TEP intervention was applied to 745 people meeting these criteria. Only 154 of them completed the pre-test, post-test and follow-up test and formed the participants of this research. The level of post-traumatic stress symptoms was examined before, after and one month after therapy. The findings indicate that, traumatic stress symptoms fell below the PTSD criteria at the end of these 5 sessions. Post-application post-test and follow-up test results fell below the PTSD cut-off score. The IES-R pre-test average is 47.89, the post-test average is 27.34 and the follow-up test average is 24.49. The follow-up scores of 70.2% of the research group whose pretest scores were 33 and above (PTSD) fell below 33. The follow-up scores of 50% of the research group whose pretest scores are 33 and above (PTSD) are seen below 24 (Normal population). The average score of the 30% research group whose follow-up scores above 33 (PTSD) is 41.9. It can be said that the therapy showed its effect rapidly and the traumatic stress symptoms continued to decrease after the therapy and this difference was also significant (p <, 000). The idea that the processing of memories in EMDR therapy continues after the sessions is supported by these results (Shapiro, 1995, 2001, 2017). In the whole sample, it can be said that the effect of EMDR R-TEP Interventions continues and traumatic stress symptoms continue to decrease significantly during the follow-up period.
