Cultural safety for EMDR therapy in Aotearoa

Description

There are new additions to the 2021 training manual including Cultural Competencies which we as a group of EMDR practitioners wanted to talk about. We thought we could use these additions as an opportunity to start a conversation on what Cultural Competencies would look like in Aotearoa for EMDR practitioners and whether Cultural Competency is better understood as Cultural Safety. We invite participants to a discussion, as a springboard, a start ing point, and to consider such questions as the role of our own cultural identities and the clien t’ s culturalidentities when we engage in EMDR Therapy; what does cultural safety EMDR practice look like; what gets in the way and what helps us practice culturally safe EMDR Therapy in Aotearoa; and in order to put this into practice how do we embed it into EMDR Therapy.
