Description

Whether caused by violence, natural or man-made disasters or vicarious exposure, untreated traumas can have profound consequences on individuals and communities across generations. Bridging the gap between those who need treatment and availability of resources is a global challenge requiring the creation of additional capacities. The World Health Organization’s agenda for addressing common mental health problems advocates for task sharing with non-specialistsusing simplified adaptations of evidence based protocols. Low Intensity (LI) Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) informed group protocols hold the potential of making a significant contribution towards this. They are brief, manualised, relatively easy to follow and can be used as immediate stabilisation tools or to reduce PTSD symptomology. They can be used in clinics, agencies, refugee camps, disaster zones, hospitals, emergency rooms, schools and private practice. The characteristics of LI group protocols make them suitable for application by specially trained and supported non-specialists but will require further research into their efficacy and the challenges of implementation.
