Health–medical challenges and grief: Group EMDR therapy for patients and caregivers
Description
Diagnosis and treatment related to health-medical challenges are grieving experiences often accompanied by a series of life-altering, traumatic events that include fears of a reduced quality of life, end of life concerns, and grief. A diagnosis of cancer can perpetuate fears of recurrence, distress can exacerbate physical symptoms, impair coping, and complicate grief. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is an evidence-based therapy proven to be an effective treatment for acute and chronic traumatic stress symptoms and is an empirically validated treatment for trauma, including negative life experiences related to health-medical challenges and grief. Group EMDR Therapy has its place in these populations and can be adapted to the physical pathology of patients, including caregivers and those experiencing grief.
