EMDR: An effective treatment for PTSD

Description

Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) is a treatment, developed by Shapiro, that many therapists are finding helpful for treating persons suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other anxiety-related disorders. This paper outlines the treatment, using EMDR, of a person suffering from PTSD as a result of a work-related injury, and discusses some of the treatment issues involved in the use of EMDR. Issues addressed include the effectiveness of EMDR compared with other forms of treatment for PTSD, ethical considerations and whether the client is disempowered by EMDR.
