Comparative treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder in veterans

The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have entirely altered the standard military response. Service members are being deployed more frequently and for increasing amounts of time. As a result, they are at a higher risk for mental health issues due to combat exposure--most notable Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. The mental health field must identify an effective, evidence-based treatment that will engage and retain a population, which faces numerous barriers to care. This study aimed to identify such a treatment by exploring veteran experiences with two new modalities--Virtual-reality exposure therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing. Eight case studies from peer-reviewed academic journals were qualitatively explored and evaluated. This study hopes to provide the social work community with additional insight into veteran experiences with mental health and suggestions for future research.
